What do StepGenie's gastroenterology images cover?

Each gastroenterology image is an infographic StepGenie drew for one of its own practice questions. It lays out the anatomy or the mechanism the answer depends on — the level of the obstruction, the failing enzyme, the route the infection took — with the conclusion written underneath.

Intestinal and colorectal disorders lead the gastroenterology set, then hepatic disorders, disorders of nutrition, gastroesophageal disorders, and congenital and developmental anomalies. Biliary tract disease and GI malignancy come next, then pancreatic disease, GI autoimmune disease and absorptive conditions.

The hepatology images are the ones worth sitting with. Cirrhosis and portal hypertension questions are decided by a sequence — pressure, shunting, then the specific complication — and a single panel holds that whole sequence in a way a paragraph does not. The pediatric and congenital images do a different job: they pin a presentation to an age, which is usually the discriminator between two answers that both sound reasonable.

Work through them by mechanism, not by disease name. Malabsorption images in particular are easier to remember as a location on the small bowel than as a list of syndromes, and the panels are drawn that way on purpose.

The GI infection panels overlap with the infectious disease gallery. If you are working through diarrhea questions specifically, that page sorts the same organisms by mechanism rather than by the site they affect.
