# Step 2 CK Study Schedule: IM-First 4 to 12-Week Plans

## What is the best Step 2 CK study schedule?

Start with the internal-medicine systems -- cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine -- because Medicine is 55-65% of Step 2 CK. Do 80 to 120 timed questions a day, six days a week, sit an NBME form every one to two weeks, and spend the last seven days on mixed blocks and the Free 120.

## The 6-week Step 2 CK study schedule

The plan first. Three and a half weeks run through the systems in internal-medicine order, a week and a half is random timed blocks, and the last seven days taper. The daily target on an ordinary day is 90 questions in the systems pass and 110 in the mixed phase at eight hours a day; form days replace it.

## Why internal medicine first?

Because the exam is mostly medicine. The USMLE Clinical Science table for Step 2 CK gives Medicine 55-65% of items, and the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal and endocrine rows of the system table are the medicine-heavy ones. Starting there means the largest share of the exam gets the freshest first pass and the most time for a second one. Pediatrics has no system row of its own: it is a lens the plan applies inside each block, which is why the schedule labels each block with the clerkships it draws on.

## How many questions a day for Step 2 CK?

Eighty to 120 a day on an ordinary study day. The exam is 16 blocks of up to 20 questions, 30 minutes each, in one 9-hour session for exams on or after May 7, 2026, so a study day of four to six 20-question blocks builds the stamina the day needs without being the day itself.

The arithmetic is the same as for any Step exam: 90 seconds to answer a question in the live format, and the schedule reserves the same again to review it, so three minutes a question all in. Four blocks with review is four hours; six blocks is six. At eight hours a day, with an hour of Anki, that leaves an hour or two for reading on the day's system, which is about what a Step 2 CK reading budget should be: the clerkships already did the first pass.

Step 2 CK stems are longer than Step 1 stems and the answers are management decisions, so the review matters even more than the count. For every miss, write one line: what the stem said, what the best next step was, and why the option you picked was the wrong step. That log is the second pass.

## How the systems are weighted

The organ-system rows get study days in proportion to the midpoint of their published range. Nutrition (15-20%), ethics and patient safety (10-15%), biostatistics and human development are marked "woven": USMLE classifies an item under more than one row, which is why this table sums to well over 100%, and those rows are tested a few items at a time inside every block. The plan inserts them as short tasks on alternate mixed-phase days instead of giving them a block.

## Where the NBME forms, UWSA forms and the Free 120 go

Each NBME Comprehensive Clinical Science Self-Assessment is four sections of 50 questions, 1 hour 15 minutes a section standard-paced; NBME lists seven forms. Step 2 CK still reports a three-digit score, so the trend across forms is the number to watch, not any single form.

- **Baseline, day 3.** One NBME form in the first week. Fresh off rotations most students are stronger than they expect on medicine and weaker on OB and psychiatry; the baseline tells the generator which.
- **Every one to two weeks.** A form roughly every ten days through the systems pass and the mixed phase, each on an ordinary study day so no week loses two days to forms.
- **UWSA 1 mid-plan, UWSA 2 about twelve days out.** 160 questions each; placed only when you tick that you have them. Forms are kept four days apart, so on a tighter calendar UWSA 1 can be left out -- the week table shows which forms actually landed.
- **Final NBME, about eight days out.** Far enough out that a poor result leaves a week to act on it.
- **Free 120, about four days out.** USMLE's own sample questions in the interactive testing experience with the new 30-minute blocks. Free, and the last practice set before the exam.

## The 4-week Step 2 CK study schedule

_For students coming straight off a strong medicine rotation, or with a month between the last shelf and the exam._

Four weeks gives one or two days to almost every system, so the medicine systems still come first but as a targeted sweep: questions, then reading only where the questions expose a gap. Four weeks is genuinely short -- the systems pass has ten days for eleven outline rows, so one row is folded into the block before it as a skim and the table marks it. On the default settings below that row is Pregnancy, Childbirth & the Puerperium. Naming a weak system in the generator moves the skim rather than removing it: mark OB weak and it gets a day, and Endocrine becomes the skim instead. If you need every row to have its own day, that is the argument for six weeks. Two NBME forms and one UWSA bracket the plan; the final week is the same as in every longer plan.

## The 8-week Step 2 CK study schedule

_For students who want a second pass through the medicine systems before the mixed phase._

At eight weeks the plan adds a shorter second pass after the first, weak systems first, built from first-pass misses rather than new reading. Every row gets its own days in the first pass; the second pass is short enough that it skims several of the smaller rows alongside their neighbours, and the table marks each one. Four NBME forms fit, plus UWSA 2 about twelve days out; at eight weeks UWSA 1 falls out, because the rule that keeps forms four days apart gives the NBME form priority over it. If the eight weeks overlap a rotation, set the generator to four or five study days and it will re-apportion.

## The 12-week Step 2 CK study schedule

_For a plan that starts during the last rotations and finishes in a shorter dedicated period._

Twelve weeks is long enough for a full first pass at a rotation pace, a second pass, three weeks of mixed blocks and a taper. Run the first six weeks at three to four hours and four or five days a week, then regenerate the plan at eight hours when dedicated starts; the miss log carries over.

## How to adapt the Step 2 CK schedule

- **Studying during rotations.** Four or five study days a week at three to four hours. The generator lowers the daily target to one or two blocks with review and pushes the forms onto days off; it does not assume hours a ward day does not have.
- **Weak on OB, psychiatry or pediatrics.** Name the weak systems and they get 30% more days in the first pass and go first in the second. Pediatrics is spread across the blocks, so name the systems where the pediatric questions are going wrong.
- **Recent shelf scores as a baseline.** Enter your recent percent correct on practice questions. Under 50% shifts calendar from mixed blocks into the systems pass; 70% or above shifts it the other way and raises the daily target.
- **Videos.** The Step 2 CK default is no videos, because rotations were the first pass. Tick videos only for a system you genuinely never saw, and expect the daily question target to drop to make room.

## Common Step 2 CK schedule mistakes

- **Starting with the smallest clerkship.** OB, psychiatry and surgery feel most urgent because they were shortest; medicine is more than half the exam. Medicine first, then the rest.
- **Treating Step 2 CK like Step 1.** A long reading pass wastes the rotations. Questions first on every day; reading only where the questions expose a gap.
- **Chasing a single NBME number.** One form is a data point; three are a trend. The plan spaces them so the trend is readable.
- **Untimed blocks.** Longer stems make pacing the Step 2 CK skill. Every block here is timed at 90 seconds a question.
- **Skipping the miss log.** A management question missed once is missed again unless the wrong step is written down. One line per miss, every day.
- **New material in the final week.** The last seven days are for mixed blocks, the miss log and the Free 120. Nothing new.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is 4 weeks enough to study for Step 2 CK?

Four weeks is enough for a student coming off a strong medicine rotation with a comfortable baseline form, because the rotations were the first pass. It gives one or two days to almost every system and no second pass; there are more outline rows than days, so the smallest row is skimmed alongside the block before it rather than getting a day of its own. The medicine systems have to come first and the weak clerkships have to be named up front. Six weeks is the safer plan for most.

### How many questions a day should I do for Step 2 CK?

For exams on or after May 7, 2026, Step 2 CK is sixteen 30-minute blocks of up to 20 questions in one 9-hour session, with a minimum of 55 minutes of break time, instead of eight 60-minute blocks of up to 40. Practise in 20-question blocks so the short-block rhythm is familiar.
