# Step 2 CK score percentiles 2026: the USMLE table, the average score and what yours means

On USMLE's current table (August 17, 2026), a 250 on Step 2 CK is the 44th percentile, a 260 the 71st and a 265 the 83rd, among 67,824 first-time takers from LCME-accredited schools in July 2023 to June 2026 (Canadian schools through June 2025). The 2025-26 average was 251 (SD 15). The passing score is 218.[1][2]

## Average Step 2 CK score, standard deviation and measurement error

The average Step 2 CK score for first-time takers from US LCME-accredited medical schools was 251 in the 2025-26 academic year, with a standard deviation of 15. It has risen by one point every academic year since 2019-20, when it was 245, while the standard deviation stayed at 15; until 2024-25 the group also included Canadian schools.[1][10][11]

_USMLE Score Interpretation Guidelines, Table 1, in three editions: updated August 18, 2022 (2019-20 to 2021-22),[11] July 24, 2024 (2022-23)[10] and August 17, 2026 (2023-24 to 2025-26).[1] USMLE advises against comparing individual scores separated in time by more than three to four years.[1]_

The same document gives Step 2 CK a standard error of measurement (SEM) of about 6 points, a standard error of difference (SED) of about 8 and a standard error of the estimate (SEE) of about 8.[1] By USMLE's definitions: about two-thirds of the scores you could earn on different sets of items covering similar content fall within one SEM (about 6 points) of your true score; two examinees whose scores differ by two or more SEDs (about 16 points) are likely to differ in proficiency; and if you tested again on a different set of items without learning or forgetting, your score would fall within one SEE (about 8 points) of this one about two-thirds of the time. The SEE is one of two ±8s that circulate; the other is NBME's CCSSA likely score range, below. Both describe how far a score would move on a retest without learning or forgetting, and neither is a forecast interval for your exam score.

## Step 1 and Step 3 percentiles

**Step 1 has no current percentile table.** It has been reported as pass/fail only since January 26, 2022, and USMLE's current guidelines list it as pass/fail with no norm column.[1] The last edition with a Step 1 column, updated August 18, 2022, covers first-time takers from LCME-accredited US and Canadian schools who tested in 2019 to 2021 (N = 63,210), and USMLE marked it for Step 1 attempts before January 26, 2022.[11] Use it only to read a numeric score from that era; the full table is on the [Step 1 percentiles and passing score page](https://www.stepgenie.app/usmle/step-1-passing-score).

**Step 3 percentiles are current.** They come from first-time takers from LCME-accredited schools who tested from January 2023 to December 2025 (N = 64,576), whose mean was 227 (SD 15); the passing score is 200.[1][3] The full table, with its earlier editions, is on the [Step 3 percentiles page](https://www.stepgenie.app/usmle/step-3-passing-score).

## Step 2 CK percentiles in earlier editions of the table

Since 2022 USMLE has replaced the guidelines PDF at the same address each time it updates the norms, so the link stays the same while the table changes; superseded editions survive in web archives. The edition updated July 24, 2024 used first-time takers from July 2021 to June 2024 (N = 69,661) and put a 250 at the 50th percentile.[10] The edition updated April 29, 2026 used July 2022 to June 2025 (N = 67,934) and put it at the 47th.[9] The current edition, updated August 17, 2026, puts it at the 44th.[1] A calculator or prep-company page that still reproduces an older table will show a higher percentile than the current one for most scores. The July 2024 edition also gave smaller error figures for Step 2 CK, a standard error of measurement of about 5 points and a standard error of the estimate of about 7, against about 6 and 8 in the current one.[10][1]

_First-time takers from LCME-accredited schools in each edition's three-year window (N = 69,661, 67,934 and 67,824); Canadian schools were part of the group until June 2025. A score between two rows sits between their percentiles: a 217 on the July 2024 edition (takers July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2024) falls between the 2nd and the 4th._

The standard has risen three times since 2014: by 6 points in July 2014, by 5 in July 2022 and by 4 in July 2025.[13][8][2] USMLE says its Management Committee reviews the data for each Step approximately once every four years and decides whether to change the recommended minimum passing score.[3] USMLE gives advance notice of passing-standard reviews on its website,[2] and as of October 15, 2026 it has announced no new Step 2 CK review. The 2024-25 academic year was the last one scored entirely on the 214 standard; the first full year on 218 (2025-26) has not been published yet.[4]

## Step 2 CK scores by specialty and the Match

NRMP's Charting Outcomes in the Match reports the Step 2 CK scores of US MD seniors who did and did not match to their preferred specialty, specialty by specialty. It covers only US MD seniors who consented to research use of their data, so it says nothing about DO or international applicants, and NRMP's copyright notice prohibits reproducing it without written permission, so this page repeats none of its figures: read your specialty's numbers in the report itself.[5]

Two cautions apply when you read them. First, they are the scores of people who matched, not scores that programs require, and the score is one line in an application that also carries clerkship grades, letters, research and a signal. Second, the percentile table above uses first-time takers from LCME-accredited schools (US and Canadian through June 2025, US only from July 2025) as its norm group, while Charting Outcomes describes one year's applicants who consented to have their data reported. The two do not convert into each other, and a percentile is not a probability of matching.

## How to read the Step 2 CK score report

Step 2 CK reports a three-digit score on a scale of 1 to 300 together with a pass or fail outcome. USMLE adjusts statistically for small differences in difficulty between forms and years, so scores are comparable across forms, and the passing standard is a set level of proficiency, so no predetermined share of examinees passes or fails.[1][14] Results are typically available within four weeks of the test date, but USMLE asks examinees to allow at least eight weeks.[3]

Page 1 of the Step 2 CK report gives the pass/fail result and your three-digit score, plots the score on the distribution of a recent group of first-time takers from LCME-accredited schools with the minimum passing score marked, and prints your score plus or minus 8 points, the standard error of the estimate. USMLE's sample report, for a test taken on April 26, 2026, shows a 221 against first-time takers from July 2024 to June 2025 (mean 250, SD 15) and a band of 213 to 229.[12] Pages 2 and 3 mark each content area as lower than, the same as or higher than your own overall performance.[12]

- **Percentile is not printed on the report.** It draws the distribution as a chart instead,[12] so use the table above for the number. A percentile read from an older edition of the guidelines is higher at most scores; see the earlier editions above.[9][10]
- **Lower is not the same as failing.** The strengths-and-weaknesses boxes compare each content area with your own overall Step 2 CK score, not with a passing examinee, and mark an area lower or higher only when the difference is statistically meaningful.[12]
- **The report is scored on the standard in force on your test date.** A 216 passed before July 1, 2025 and fails after it.[2]

## Predicting your score before test day

NBME's Comprehensive Clinical Science Self-Assessment (CCSSA) reports its total score on the same 1 to 300 scale as Step 2 CK, as an estimate of your Step 2 CK performance with the same knowledge, under the same conditions. Its likely score range of ±8 points shows how much that score could vary if you tested again without learning or forgetting: about two-thirds of the time, your CCSSA score would land within 8 points of the reported one.[6] NBME also publishes the chance of passing Step 2 CK within a week for each CCSSA score on the 218 standard: a 194 gives a 50% chance, 200 gives 64%, 210 gives 82%, 218 gives 91%, 225 gives 95%, 230 gives 97% and 239 or above gives 99%.[7]

Read the CCSSA number as a band rather than a point: on a retest without learning or forgetting, a CCSSA of 245 would land between 237 and 253 about two-thirds of the time, a band that spans three rows of the percentile table above.[6] That band measures the imprecision of one form, not how much you will learn or forget before exam day, so it is not a forecast interval for your Step 2 CK score.
