## Why does a Step 2 CK score sit at 230-240?

A Step 2 CK score that holds at 230-240 across two or three NBMEs is usually a reasoning-and-pacing pattern repeating across every subject rather than a content hole, which is why another pass of a review book does not move it.

Step 2 CK questions rarely ask what a disease is. They ask what you do next, in what order, and which of two defensible options the vignette is actually set up for. That is a different skill from recall, and it fails in ways that feel like bad luck from the inside: you narrow correctly to two and pick the wrong one, or you get the medicine right and the sequencing wrong, or you are fine through forty questions and wrong through the last twenty because the buffer went early.

The practical consequence is that a plateau needs a diagnosis before it needs more hours. Two students both stuck at 236 can need opposite things -- one needs to stop reading and start doing timed blocks, the other needs to slow down and stop skimming stems. A tutor charges the same either way. Working out which one you are does not have to cost anything.

- **Narrowed to two, picked wrong** -- The knowledge is there and the discriminator is not. It shows up as a solid percentage on easy questions and a flat one on hard ones, and it responds to reading why each distractor is wrong rather than to more content.
- **Right diagnosis, wrong next step** -- Management sequencing -- stabilise, confirm, treat -- is its own body of knowledge, and it is examined far harder on Step 2 CK than on Step 1. Knowing the disease is not the question.
- **Fine early, wrong late** -- A pacing problem wearing a knowledge problem's clothes. Only timed blocks make it visible; untimed tutor-mode practice hides it completely.
- **Percentages fine, assessment flat** -- Usually some mix of untimed practice, repeated questions and reviewing in the mode that reveals the answer immediately. The fix is a change in how you practise, not in what you read.

## What does a Step 2 CK tutor do about a plateau?

A Step 2 CK tutor's real work on a plateau is listening to you answer questions out loud, telling you which of those patterns you are in, and rebuilding the remaining weeks around that answer.

That is worth paying for, and the honest providers say the first session is diagnostic. A tutor will also do things no product does: read your assessment report next to your question-bank data, tell you whether your test date is still realistic, and hold you to a plan at the point where the plan stops being comfortable.

What a tutor cannot do is be there for the other two hundred hours. Published packages run from 5 to 50 hours; even the largest is small next to the time you will spend inside a question bank between now and the exam. Whatever judgement you buy has to be carried by whatever you use in between sessions.

## What is the honest difference between an AI tutor and a person?

Twenty hours with a Step 2 CK tutor and a year of an AI tutor are different products, and the price gap between them mostly reflects that rather than settling which is better.

A tutor gives you undivided attention on your situation, including the parts that are not medicine -- your dedicated schedule, your application timeline, your nerve on a bad day. A question bank with an AI tutor attached is there at two in the morning, never runs out of hours, and is where you will spend nearly all of your actual study time; it will not, however, notice that you have not opened it since Tuesday.

The sequencing that makes sense for most people is the cheap diagnosis first. Run a timed block, look at first-attempt accuracy by system rather than at your overall percentage, and work out which of the four plateau patterns is yours. If two weeks aimed at that specific thing moves the number, you have saved a four-figure sum. If it does not, you arrive at the first tutoring session knowing what to ask for, which is what makes bought hours worth their price.

## When is a human Step 2 CK tutor worth it?

Several Step 2 CK situations justify the four-figure spend, and they have less to do with content than with timing, stakes and what happens on test day.
